From Loving One to One Love (part 2) – a conversation with Dr. Bob Rosenthal and Bruce Rawles

From Loving One to One Love - by Robert Rosenthal MD

“His gentle Voice is calling from the known to the unknowing. He would comfort you, although He knows no sorrow. He would make a restitution, though He is complete; a gift to you, although He knows that you have everything already. He has Thoughts which answer every need His Son perceives, although He sees them not. For Love must give, and what is given in His Name takes on the form most useful in a world of form.

These are the forms which never can deceive, because they come from Formlessness Itself. Forgiveness is an earthly form of love, which as it is in Heaven has no form.” – W-pI.186.13,14:1

In this video, “Dr. Bob” a.k.a. Robert Rosenthal, M.D. – author of “From Never-Mind to Ever-Mind talks about his latest book which released February 2020: “From Loving One to One Love: Transforming Relationships Through A Course In Miracles.”  In this conversation with Bruce Rawles, Bob – drawing from and building upon ideas from his earlier books – covers some of the highlights of this 2nd book – the next in a 5-part series. This book explores relationships, certainly one of the most important emphases in ACIM with its practical classroom of applied forgiveness.

Here are some helpful quotes from chapters 6-10 of Bob’s new book:

“… ego takes an altogether different and characteristically insane approach to problem solving. It ignores the cause and deals only with effects.”

“… if a problem is to be resolved, it must be tackled at its source. And so the first step in dealing with shame (or any other negative emotion) is to look for and identify its causes. We must be willing to push past the ego’s defenses in order to be totally honest, first with ourselves, then with others. We have to admit that our psychological defenses have not served us well when it comes to shame, and therefore, however counterintuitive it may seem, however anxious it makes us feel, we will go in the opposite direction. We must find the courage to bring to light what we hid out of shame.”

“… our private thoughts have no reality. They’re like thought bubbles in the ego’s lonely cartoon world.”

“The ego of course treasures private thoughts. They’re all it is capable of. It cannot share love. It can only pretend to love while going about its business, cloaking itself in layer upon layer of obfuscation and subterfuge. It can never reveal the one guilty, shameful secret that lies at the core of its existence—namely, the separation from God— because then its game would be up. You would remember God and awaken. As a result, the ego cannot be truthful about anything. Truth is its foe.”

“We are all ego addicts, and the Holy Spirit can serve as the ideal therapist.”

“When we bring our secrets to the Holy Spirit, we are not begging for absolution. There is no hierarchy of sins: none is greater or lesser, and all are forgivable, because there is no such thing as sin. In the Holy Spirit’s sight, all error is equal, and equally dispensed with. Where we felt shame, inferiority, failure, and sin, He sees only love and its wholeness. When we look at our relationships with the benefit of His perspective—which is the same thing as giving them to Him for healing—they transform.”

“You signal your willingness to awaken by bringing forth what is within you. Without the preservative of secrecy, your shame—shrapnel from the war of separation— begins to migrate toward the surface. Its power over you weakens. From within the dream, you begin to stir. You discover you are not reviled, because you did nothing wrong. You did not abandon God, nor did God abandon you. There is nothing to fear. Your long nightmare cracks open. Light streams in and begins the transformation to what the Course calls the ‘happy dream.’ ”
