Tom Campbell: The Origins of Consciousness; a New Look at MBT
In this interview, Tom Campbell takes his theory back further in time than in his My Big TOE trilogy, with some new comments about the origins of the LCS (Larger Consciousness System). This conversation adds depth and breadth to MBT's two assumptions: Consciousness both exists, and evolves. If evolution is a reasonable assumption, then it is also reasonable that the LCS had to evolve its quality just as we do. Was the LCS always the same level of loving being it is today? How might the LCS have arrived at the conclusion that Love is the only answer? These new ideas, and Tom stresses that they are primarily conjecture, add a new understanding to the myths, stories, and foundations of ancient belief systems that tend to see the Source (god or gods) as demanding, angry, vengeful, and desiring obedience, adulation and tribute. Compare that to the more modern attitude toward Source as being caring, helpful and kind. There may be more to this dichotomy than simply man creating god in his own image. Professor Eric Cunningham, history department, and former head of Catholic studies at Gonzaga University, suggests that this theory solves the mystery he has often pondered regarding the message of vengeance in the Old Testament, versus the message of love in the New Testament. Bubbles of enlightenment occurring over the last four millennia may have their roots in the personal growth of the LCS as it evolved from managing IUOCs to working with them. That “Love is the answer” is the experimental result of an efficient conscious information system. Any successful complex interactive social system will eventually discover that respect, caring, and cooperation (becoming love) is the only way the system can maintain its positive evolution – i.e., survive in the long term.
